Dear Friends,
RAX has completed 25 years of long Journey and now it is being converted into CDOT NGN exchange at kiitur .
I am sure C-DOTians (x and present) will be very excited to celebrate the milestone .
Now that Indigenous G-PON technology will be part of NOFN project headed by our dear Sam Pitroda and there is renewed focus on Indigenous manufacturing .
We are redefining the moment for next 25 years as well .We delivered Voice 25 years back; now we will deliver broadband , Voice,Video,Data,Photos ,Music,Remote medicine,
Remote education ,Remote repair ,and host of new services over fiber oriented 100 Mbps connectivity through G-PON to all places like kittur .
Our NGN will convert digital TDM switches into more efficient IP based NGN .
Sam was there to guide us in 80s and Sam is there to steer this movement along with many others in government like DOT,planning commission ,PSU service providers,TCIL and
Ofcourse C-DOT.
I want deeper involvement of very one those who created this "RAX moment" 25 years back. This group understands the implication of communication on economy and life.
following is tentative plan.
1.Date is 7th August 2012 .
2. Sam Will be there along with Hon'ble MOC at C-DOT Delhi auditorium.
3.Mrs & Dr. Pitke will be there at Kittur to preside the function there
4.Mrs.& Mr. Meemamshi will be chief guest at C-DOT Bangalore
5.All x-C-DOtians are invited to join one of the three places
6.We will start working on media Coverage presence Please give ideas as to how to create better awareness in your area /community/net .
7.We will start working on PR Package ideas and help required for dissemination of course C-DOT is already working on this
8.we will also call the media .
9. We will send C-DOT engineers to find out if that person is still in good health and there or else we will take oldest subscriber of Kittur exchange .
10.C-DOT will arrange video conferencing across Delhi,Bangalore ,Kittur for live interaction .
10. CDOT will do all the technical work and work with BSNL.
Now some suggestion are required
How to get X-CODTIans from abroad to participate? -we will have webcasting of program.
How to recreate old magic of C-DOT so that everyone feels that they are participating ?
You can mail Geeta Saini (geeta@cdotd.ernet.in) and indicate where you would like to attend the function .

Congrats and Thanks to Vipin & to all C-DOTians & Ex-CDoTians contributed for this successful RAX product, which was very well received, not only in our Indian telephone network and also in the Global telephone network of various other countries. Now it is great to know, that C-DOT is celebrating this important milestone of 25 years of RAX systems in our Indian Telephone network.
It was great to be part of this wonderful RAX development team and then heading this whole of RAX product team in C-DOT, for quite a while, until I left C-DOT during the year 2004 to Join my current company of Ittiam systems. And in fact I had an opportunity to work for the maximum years (close to 14 long years) for this product line alone in C-DOT, compared to anyone else in C-DOT and I really very much satisfied and feel too good on this front.
And on this important milestone silver-jubilee celebrations occasion, I remember and thank all my senior RAX team members consists of Venu, TRS, A.K.Prasad, Rajavel, Perisamy, J.Subramanian, Muthumayan, Ahmad Fatehally, Satish M Kulkarni, A.Bhavani Shanker, etc., etc., for giving me such a wonderful opportunity to work on this successful RAX product line.
Later, I was heading the whole of RAX product development team, in developing and supporting all the small products designed for our Indian Rural market, as part of Small Products Development Group, starting from 128P RAX, 256P RAX, Customization of 128p & 256p RAX products for Global needs (Export markets) and exported to about 20 to 25 other foreign countries, AN-RAX, E-RAX [Enhanced RAX], VE-RAX [Value Engineered RAX], ETU (Enhanced Terminal Unit) for both RAX and SBM modules of MAX switches, low cost TRAU and BSC systems for Rural India market for close to 14 long years, out of my entire C-DOT professional career close to 15 years during the years 1990 to 2004.
Congrats once again to everyone and all the very best to all the C-DOT people for this great silver-jubilee celebrations for our first successful RAX product launch from C-DOT, within a couple of years of our organization C-DOT’s formation.

Subject: C-DOT 256P RAXs - Prove its worthiness
Dear ex-RAXians,
This is what the department of telecom officers have to say as part of the lessons from the devastating earthquake that hit Gujarat :-
".. as part of the lessons learnt from the devastation in Gujarat, department of telecom sources said that the 256 LINE C-DOT EXCHANGES have proved their worth. They have proved to be rugged, the real workhorses, and required very minor repairs" ...
Times of INDIA dated Feb. 2, 2001 New Delhi edition
Looking back perhaps a no FRILLs/no FART SIMPLE design methodology for hardware and What U See What U Get assembly programing using a humble 8bit CPU with 256K byte paged memory for software does seem to have done wonders.
The success of this RAX product mostly due to all you people (exRAXians). For your information, today we have around 30,000 256P RAX switches in our Indian Telecom Network ( 75% of total telephone exchanges present in INDIA and constituting 6 million telephone lines [about 35 % of total C-DOT lines] ) , apart from around 500 systems present outside India, in over 20 different Countries.
My thanks and Congrats to all you people for your tiring efforts put during the initial stages of this product development and subsequent field trail activities. Be proud as an Ex-CDOTian and Ex-RAXians. Though most of you are now in US, your product ( RAX) is serving lot of Indians here. So be proud as an Indian too.
With Warm Wishes,
B.Baskaran

Hi Baskar,
Good to hear from you. How are things with CDOT otherwise ? Manish Sharma told me that you are in a lead position now. You are still associated with RAX in some form (like value addition or support) or you have moved onto some other project ? Who are the other Ex-RAX souls still left in CDOT ?
Just kidding:(skip reading this if you don't want to waste time)
If you have any major field problems with RAX, please let us know. We will ship Muthu and/or Pat and/or Shastra free of cost for servicing and you can keep them with you as long as you need. And, if you have RAX enhancement idea, TRS and Shoukath would be more than happy to help design a 1024 RAX on the same lines. Kuls and JS will add some more CP pages of software. Guruanand and Pari will add some MP pages of software. And the rest of us (Ex-RAXians) can mess with it further as you want.
We have all kinds of people in stock in various parts of the world:
i) call processing gang (JS, Selva, ..),
ii) fault tolerance & redundancy builders (Ramesh, Prabha, Radha ...),
iii) MF guys (Srinivas Nimmegowda, Paul, ...),
iv) Hi-fi test software group (Vinayak, RAK, RK, ..),
v) your good old H/W architects (Karnad and his buddies: Julu, Shastra, ...),
vi) to convert all assembly to C, C++ (VRS and his PBX buddies, ...)
vii) remote maintenance (Manish Sinha, ...),
viii) to make it all wireless (Manish sharma, ..)
ix) Hi-tech support guys (Prabhushankar, Basheer, Hilda, ...)
x) all-rounders who can mess with anything, anytime - 24 hrs, 7 days a week (Muthu, Pat, ...)
Is Seetharaman still there to motivate people around ?
Have fun. I will keep in touch with you.
Regards,
Rajavel
Dear Rajavel,
Thanks for your detailed mail. I thought you will at least respond to this mail about RAX. My thought had proved correct. I was very much disappointed for not having contact with you, since you will never respond to my mails. I am very happy now. As when we were there together at C-DOT, I only used tell and write to Muthu regarding you. When I came twice to USA, I could meet some our RAX people and talk to some of them. Thanks for writing detailed mail and recollecting the old RAX group structure. Now only myself and Hilda (Divya) left out in the RAX team. I am the SPM of the group handling 26 members. We have RAX, SBM-4k ( MAX enhancement) and GSM TRAU, GSM MSC- Echo Cancellor ( DSP Applications). As you informed please keep in touch. Can you please send other Ex-CDOTian (Ex-RAXians) email addresses to me. I definitely wanted TRS, Shoukath, Kuls and Radha email IDs if it is available with you. Seetharaman is still with C-DOT. Please send your official and Res. addresses and telephone ids. Once again thanks for your remembrance of all the Ex-RAXians and the RAX Product. Please keep in touch.

Dear Baskaran,
Thanks for sharing this piece of news. It makes all of us proud to have contributed to such a wonderful product as well being an Indian.
Regards,
JS
The insistence of Sam and others on the ruggedness of the RAXs has been justified, though otherwise what has happened in Gujarat is awful.

Hi Bhaskar,
Nice to hear that from you. I am happy that RAX is able to sustain even Earthquakes.
It also brings to my memory when RAX required very less repair after a flood in Ethiopia.
How are other things at your end? Have you been anywhere recently?
Keep in touch....
with best wishes,
Nagesh Kumar B.V.
Hi Baskar,
It is nice to hear and i feel you are the first person to thanks, because you are still serving Indian Telecom (our nation). I think everybody is fine there here i am also fine. What news

Another great milestone that brings back fond memories. Kudos to all who kept the RAX going through these years.
Would be good to have some current statistics on the CDOT installed base across all products. I used to visit the 'map' on the CDOT website over the years and marvel at the way the numbers grew but not sure they are fully updated with info on ALL products and their evolutions.
